 A new era of health, productivity, longevity and prosperity is now at hand. Most diseases and plagues will be prevented, controlled or eliminated. Future generations will likely recall our time as a dark age filled with ignorance and fear, much as we regard an earlier time when anesthesia, antibiotics and vaccines were unknown and leeches were used to treat disease.

The hallmark of effective theory is its ability to explain and predict disparate phenomena. Accordingly, the ultimate objective of medical science is a theory that explains physiology, pathology, allostasis and their relationships. Such a theory would vastly enhance the effectiveness and reliability of medical treatments. Unfortunately, vertebrate biology remains stubbornly mysterious and confusing. For example, vertebrates obviously possess the means to maintain and repair their body structure, but how this happens is unknown. Despite the discovery of DNA, embryological development remains a mystery. The physiological differences between reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals remain obscure. Conventional medical theory fails to explain critical aspects of physiology and pathology, including the nature of blood pressure, the palpable pulse, atherosclerosis, cancer, apoptosis, sepsis, eclampsia, rheumatoid diseases, hemoglobin encapsulation, and the regulation of blood flow and cardiac output. Lacking such understanding, medicine remains an art based on experiment, where physicians must judge their treatments in terms of symptoms, so that they are often inefficient, unpredictable or counterproductive. 

The DNA mechanism by itself does not explain how genetic information is converted into embryological development. In theory, DNA/RNA signaling might explain adult biology, but despite more than 60 years of intense research, there is little evidence that supports this idea.  

Stress theory has always provided the simplest (and therefore best) explanation of vertebrate biology. It originated in 1951 when Hans Selye postulated the existence of a "companion mechanism" that works closely with DNA to convert genetic information into cell proliferation and differentiation to enable embryological structural development. DNA then becomes quiescent, but the companion mechanism remains active to maintain and repair mature structures in the adult animal. The continuous activity of the companion mechanism would explain tissue repair, hemodynamic physiology, organ regulation, and disease manifestations. Hyperactivity of the companion mechanism, induced by environmental stress factors such as bacterial invasion, injury, radiation, and toxic chemicals, would explain disease and disease relationships. 

It has long been understood that the identification of the companion mechanism would revolutionize medicine. It would simultaneously explain the nature of disease, hemodynamic physiology, embryology, tissue repair, and their relationships to one another. It would elevate medicine from an art based on experiment to a science founded on theory.  It would enable efficient and profitable pharmaceutical development, and provide physicians with the means to direct their medical treatments at the causes of disease rather than judge them in terms of symptoms. It would vastly improve the reliability and effectiveness of medical treatments.

Stress theory was the most important idea in medicine for more than 30 years after the discovery of DNA, and it inspired a massive international research effort to discover the companion mechanism. The intense research during that era advanced our understanding of photosynthesis, the Krebs Cycle, the immune system, the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis, and the coagulation cascade, but no clue of the mysterious companion mechanism could be found. Because of this, stress theory remains impotent, for the companion mechanism must be identified before stress theory can be tested, verified, and utilized. The failure was so frustrating that stress theory was largely abandoned, forgotten, and even repudiated. However, all this is about to change, because recently published evidence has unexpectedly enabled the discovery and description of the “Mammalian Stress Mechanism” (MSM) that explains how stress theory works. The MSM fulfills all the predictions and expectations of stress theory. It explains hemodynamic physiology, tissue repair, pathology, allostasis, and how DNA genetic information is converted into embryological development.  

Once the MSM has been tested, verified and accepted, it will enable the “Universal Theory of Medicine” originally predicted by the visionary Hans Selye in 1954. The universal theory encompasses cohesive new theories of anesthesia, analgesia, atherosclerosis, amyloidosis, apoptosis and malignancy. It clarifies the nature of most mysterious diseases, including eclampsia, rheumatoid disease, diabetes, infarction, pneumonia, asthma, influenza, hypertension, congestive heart failure, Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, Multi-Organ Failure Syndrome (MOFS), and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). It explains the benefits of exercise conditioning and the harmful effects of surgical stress. It enables anesthetic technique to be adjusted to optimize surgical safety and outcome.It enables a prompt, reliable, safe and comfortable cure for cancer and the ability to prevent, cure or control most other diseases. It will guide pharmaceutical research and development to produce effective treatments for nearly every form of disease.

It is not surprising that the MSM has been discovered nearly 60 years after its original prediction. New scientific theories usually appear more than 30 years ahead of their time, and must await the accumulation of evidence and the death of critics before they can gain acceptance. Furthermore, amateurs working outside the specialty are the source of most powerful new scientific ideas, as opposed to established researchers and experts in the field. For example, Oswald Avery toiled for a lifetime to produce definitive evidence that DNA is the medium of genetic inheritance, whereupon Watson and Crick, who were amateurs in the field, discovered and described the DNA mechanism. Note this passage from “The Pattern of Scientific Progress” by Kuhn (1970):

“Normal science” is a generally tranquil stage in which scientific data are acquired within the framework of a theory or “paradigm” that is generally accepted by all or most scientists. During this period, data are obtained that represent an anomaly---they do not fit the accepted paradigm.  These data usually lead to several new theories to explain the anomalous data and produce a contentious and unsettled period.  Finally, a single theory emerges that becomes the new paradigm and represents a revolution from the old paradigm to the new one. Within this new paradigm, normal science produces new data and proceeds until a period of anomaly again arises, thus leading to a new cycle that culminates in the revolution of a new paradigm. “

Stress theory will not be accepted overnight, for science is slow to accept radical new ideas, and medicine is the most conservative of all sciences. The power and promise of stress theory remain rejected and forgotten. MSM operation is complex, counterintuitive, and contrary to entrenched medical ideas. Careful study is required to comprehend its ability to unify disparate elements of physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and stress. Meanwhile, despite more than 60 years of intense research, the DNA paradigm has failed to produce medical progress and inspire pharmaceutical development. The Genome Project was expected to revolutionize our understanding of disease and physiology. It cost billions of dollars and was completed more than ten years ago, but it failed utterly. Medical research may now be approaching a crisis or turning point where alternative ideas and approaches will be entertained. As that happens, stress theory will produce a new paradigm that will inspire fresh research and revolutionize medicine. 

Without the stress mechanism, DNA is a carriage without a horse. The DNA mechanism by itself cannot explain how DNA genetic information is converted into embryological development, let alone the nature of tissue repair, hemodynamic physiology, and disease.  The SRM explains how DNA controls embryological development, how mature structures are maintained and repaired, and the nature of physiology and pathology. This will revolutionize medical understanding to the point that most medical textbooks will be rendered obsolete, and stress theory will fulfill its long-awaited potential to inspire medical research, pharmaceutical development, and useful new treatments.

Stress theory exceeds the bounds of medicine. It confers a cohesive new theory of biology that encompasses embryology, evolution, anatomy, behavior, intelligence and taxonomy as well as physiology, pharmacology, and stress. It has similar implications for botany and microbiology. It suggests that the very secret of life may at long last be at hand.
